Its features include an abnormally wider bit, whose edges on the outside are sharply turned upwards. On the underside of this adze there is an inscription of the makers name 'W Gilpin', above which there is the figure of a sun with a crown inside it, and the number 2 above the sun. This is a modification of the shipwrights adze. The double curved haft (or helve) gives the tool the essential balance without which the shipwright would find it unmanageable for his work needs. It is a single-edged cutting tool that has to be used vigorously with a chopping motion in shaping the timber. Shipwright Adze A shipwright adze can be used from overhead, in front of the waist, and also from chest level. Shipwrights peg-poll adze - this standard adze personifies the shipwrights trade. The peg poll was used for driving spikes or bolts below the surface when dubbing down. Railroad Adze The railroad adze is used for breaking the handles while shaping railroad ties or sleepers. A shipwright would try not to polish the helve too much, because control would be lost with it swivelling in the hand. It was different from an axe in that it had a long slender curved blade. It is a place to find content about Coast Salish, Nuu-chah-nulth and Makah sculpture under that category. Adze: A shipwrights tool, similar to an axe, used for shaping and dressing wood. The helve has an oval section, and this in the hand helps to control the blade. Totem pole is a common misconception for what welcome figures are but this site aims to educate the public on that issue. The helve, usually of ash or hickory, needs to be a good fit in the palm of the hand, it can be used in any direction without undue fatigue, and the shipwright has absolute control over his adze.
